15000 divorce cases registered in Karachi courts annually: moot told


KARACHI: Up to 15000 cases of separation between couples and children custody are being registered in Karachi annually. Materialism, urbanization, industrialization, democracy, female employment and media role are also included in the reasons behind divorce. This was told to seminar on “divorce a grievous social issue” held at University of Karachi on Wednesday.

The moot, organized by Department of Sociology of the University, was further told that family system in Europe have reached to the verge of destruction. Remaining in the ambit of Islam and not breaching social norms will not only make our marital life pleasant but will also firm our family system.

Khwaja Naveed Advocate said: “Divorce is very harmful for society; children of separated couples become criminal, couples should try their best to avoid it”.

Zia Awan Advocate said that on international pressure laws were made in the country but implementation upon them became an issue. “Only law is not enough for prevention of child marriage,” he said.

Chairperson Women Lawyers Association Faiza Khaleel Advocate said that in most diverse cases men wanted compromise but the women sought immediate separation which affected future of their children. She said that if men follow divine way for divorce and not gave immediate and definite divorce many families could save from destruction.

“Usually lawyers are show pleasant dreams to their clients in the beginning but in fact getting divorce by court is a long and difficult process which further disturbed and destroy the family,” she said. Dilfaraz Ahmad, Khalid Nawaz Khan Advocate, Sajid Aziz and Dr Fata Muhammad Burfat also spoke.
