KARACHI: In a crackdown against profiteers, 200 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 309900 fine for selling commodities above government rates. Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.
He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Saddar, Civil Line, Garden, SITE, Baldia, Orangi, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Model Colony, Bin Qasim, Landhi and Korangi.
In the crackdown, 21 milkmen, 14 shopkeepers of general commodities, 23 chicken sellers, 70 vegetable sellers, 55 fruit sellers, three meat sellers and 14 vegetable sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while nine persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
