KARACHI: In a massive crackdown against profiteers, 277 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 271700 fine for selling commodities above government rates. Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.
He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Saddar, Civil Line, Garden, SITE, Baldia, Orangi, Ferozabad, Jamshed Quarters, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, Orangi, Baldia, Bin Qasim, New Karachi and Model Colony.
In the crackdown, 63 milkmen, two shopkeepers of general commodities, 20 chicken sellers, 122 vegetable sellers and 70 fruit sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while 43 persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
