28 thalassemia centres in Sindh soon

KARACHI: Provincial Health Minister, Jam Mehtab Hussain Dahar, on Friday said that 28 thalassemia centres will be established throughout the Sindh province to provide treatment and diagnostics facilities to such patients.

This he announced while talking to media persons during the inauguration ceremony of three-day 10th National Thalassemia conference and workshop organized by Thalassemia Federation Pakistan at Najimuddin Auditorium, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.

Dahar said Sindh Prevention and Control of Thalassaemia Act, 2013 will be implemented in letter and spirit, while condition of thalassaemia test of couples before marriage will be enforced in the province.

He said thalassaemia patient care will be improved in the province in future, once centres are made operational. He appreciated the role of Thalassemia Federation Pakistan for creating awareness in the society to curb thalassaemia from the country.

The representatives of Non-Governmental Organizations demanded of the health minister to play his role in implementation of thalassemia law and inclusion of test of couples before marriage in Nikah-Nama in order to prevent young generation from blood disorder.

Ex-Governor Sindh General (r) Moinuddin Haider, Prof Anis Bhatti, Dr Saqib Ansari, Dr Zahid Ansari and representatives from Non-Governmental Organizations engaged in thalassemia patient- care activities in the province were also present on this occasion.
