KARACHI: In a crackdown against profiteers, 49 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 92500 fine for selling commodities above government rates, while two others were jailed.
Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.
He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Liaquatabad, Gulberg, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Model Colony, Shah Faisal, Saddar Aram Bagh, Jamshed Quarters, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Landhi and Korangi.
In the crackdown, 23 milkmen, 12 shopkeepers of general commodities, eight chicken sellers, one vegetable seller, one meat seller and four fruit sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while two persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
