KARACHI: In a crackdown against profiteers, 59 shopkeepers were charged with Rs 104500 fine for selling commodities above government rates, while two others were jailed.
Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has said that the campaign launched against profiteers would continue till they ensured that the commodities were sold at fixed rates.
He further said that city administration had focused those areas where complaints against price hike were received. These areas included Liaquatabad, Gulberg, Nazimabad, North Nazimabad, New Karachi, Murad Memon Goth, Shah Faisal, Model Colony, Saddar, Aram Bagh, Civil Line, Garden, Jamshed Qaurters, Gulzar-e-Hijri, Orangi Town, Landhi and Korangi.
In the crackdown, 25 milkmen, 18 shopkeepers of general commodities, 11 chicken sellers, one vegetable seller and four fruit sellers were fined for selling essential items at excessive prices, while two persons were sent to jail for continuous violation of official rates.
