AIGP seeks report on extortion menace

KARACHI: Additional Inspector General of Police (AIGP) Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo on Wednesday took notice of media reports of alleged extortion activities in the city and instructed DIGs to send the report on such crimes and securities arrangements in this regard in the city.

AIGP said that the extraordinary measures had been taken against crimes, especially against extortions and other criminals.

Thebo said that police patrolling, snap checking, pickets and intelligence should be boosted around the shopping centers and Eid Bachat Bazaars and other public place during the last 10 days of Ramazan.

According to Central Police Office (CPO) Karachi report, from 5 September 2013 to 15 July 2014, 352 extortionists were arrested and six others killed in different police encounters in the city.

In a statement, spokesman of Sindh police said that AIGP Karachi had announced appreciation reward of Rs 200,000 for Station House Officer (SHO) and police party of Solider Bazaar police for killing two criminals in an encounter with them.
