KARACHI: Aga Khan University Hospital, the teaching hospital of Aga Khan University, is organizing an inauguration ceremony for its newly commissioned Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with comprehensive facilities on January 28.
In Pakistan, neonatal mortality remains a major cause for all infant deaths with 1 in 19 babies dying in the first month of life. The common causes of new born deaths are birth asphyxia (lack of oxygen to the baby during birth process), premature birth, low birth weight, infections like pneumonia, sepsis and diarrhoea. Lack of adequate antenatal care and skilled attendants at the time of delivery are the main causes for these conditions. This new expanded facility is the first gift from the corporate sector in Pakistan for the University Hospital.
