Anti-encroachment operation fails, says Mir

KARACHI: Business community leader has expressed dissatisfaction over ongoing actions against encroachments in the city.

The relevant authority seemed unserious as the encroachments are re-appearing within a week after removal, said President All Karachi Tajir Ittihad Atiq Mir while talking to PPI on Sunday.

He demanded removal of encroachments, particularly from busy markets on regular basis so that the business community could take a sigh of relief.

Mir alleged that more than 60 percent officials in Anti Encroachments Cell (AEC) were not in favour of removing encroachments on regular basis as it was a source of income for them.

He said that some elements in police were also responsible for re-establishing encroachments while political involvement was also a main factor.

To a question, he said that encroachments in Saddar and its surrounding areas had fully re-emerged within 10 days after an operation against the same. “The encroachment mafia seems to be more powerful than Anti Encroachment Cell,” he noted.

He said that there was a cold war among different institutions responsible for removing encroachments that was why they did not conduct joint operation against encroachments. He said that encroachments in busy markets were a big headache for traders and it was the need to remove them on regular basis.

Mir also expressed concern at traffic jams in the city and said that there was no plan to resolve that issue.
