Blaze engulfs garment factory; five injured

KARACHI: A third degree fire broke out in a garment factory near Valika Chowrangi in SITE area on Monday, incurring millions of rupees loss and injuring five people.

A fire department official told PPI that the fire that started at 11:24am could hardly be controlled with the help of 20 fire tenders, including one of Karachi Port Trust and one of Cantonment Board Clifton, in eight and a half hour.

“Firemen had to break a wall of the affected Leena Textile with the help of heavy machinery to get clear way into the factory. The material that has been burnt mostly was cloth and polyester spin,” he said.

He told that a godown next to the factory was also somewhat affected, however timely action saved fire spreading in that way.

The fire department official said that the loss could not be estimated but it would be in crores of rupees.

Rescue sources told that five people got injured in the fire, including two women.

The fire department of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has long been working without snorkels, that have become out of order due to negligence of senior officers, and contracts of bowsers drivers could not be renewed which is becoming the reason of making the situation worse as the department has to arrange alternatives which further delays the process.

Senior Director Municipal Services Masood Alam could not be found at the incident and did not respond to repeated calls for comment.
