Karachi: Broken roads in different parts of the city have been troubling citizens and resulting in prolonged traffic jams, but their repair and patch work is yet to be started.
Dozens of main roads including Main University Road are in want of urgent repair and patch work. These roads are not only causing traffic jams but are also source of rapid wear and tear of vehicles, specially motorcycles. Potholes on these roads often result in traffic accidents.
The Main University Road from Safoora Chowrangi to Karachi University needs urgent repair, but work on its patch work is yet to be started. Even a newly constructed road, New Preedy Street, has broken down in front of the City Government Car Parking Plaza, Saddar.
Previous day, Sindh minister for local government Shareel Memon told the Sindh assembly that the provincial government has already released funds for repair and patch work on the broken roads. He said the repair and patchwork of these roads would be started soon and the citizens should witness physical work on these streets very soon.
President Voice Against Corruption Ahsan Bari said road repair and maintenance is considered most lucrative of government contracts as margin of kickbacks is very high on this type of contract. He said the government should ensure transparency in awarding such contacts in larger public interest.
However, the citizens have expressed concern that like past the contracts of repair of these roads should not be given to that corrupt contactor mafia, that has already made millions in past in the name of road repair in Karachi. They said durable construction and repair of roads would not only facilitate citizens but also save billions of rupees of the government of Sindh that are consumed on frequent repairs of roads constructed with substandard material.
