KARACHI: Ten new locomotives imported from China by National Logistic Cell (NLC) and 14 by Pakistan Railways (PR) are yet to lug the passengers and goods trains; resultantly, the complaints of train delays could not yet be resolved.
Pakistan Railway Workers Union Chairman Manzoor Razi told PPI that in January 2014 the NLC had imported 10 new locomotives to be used in goods trains. He said sadly these locomotives are still parked unutilized despite passage of more than four months as the Pakistan Railways and the NLC have yet to ink the accord to run goods trains.
Razi said the Pakistan Railways imported 5 engines in March and 9 more in April this year from China. However, these locomotives are still not used to lug passenger and goods trains. He said for these 14 new Chinese engines a special diesel workshop has been set up in Lahore and presently these engines are on trial run. He said there is a dire need to use these new imported locomotives to lug passenger and goods trains. He said each imported engine costs Rs300-400million and they should be used for their purpose of import without further delay. He said presently there are a lot of complaints about train delay. He said trains like Sukkur Express are reaching their destinations 20 to 30 hours late, irking passengers in this hot weather. He said after utilizing new engines a considerable punctuality could be brought in train timings.
He said at least one of the new locomotives should be allocated from Karachi-Hyderabad. Mirpurkhas route in Sindh province to facilitate millions of passengers in these areas. He requested that the fate of 10 NLC engines should also be decided soon so that these locomotives can lug more goods trains. He said presently Pakistan Railway is running two to three goods trains.
