Karachi: Poor patients are suffering at Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) due to differences between senior professors and medical superintendent.
Sources at the hospital said that Medical Superintendent (MS) CHK Prof M Saeed Qureshi and senior professors have developed serious differences over non-compliance of duty by doctors at OPD. As result, the poor patients at CHK are suffering as the bureaucracy has no time to improve healthcare service delivery in this largest teaching hospital of Karachi.
Sources said the MS had served non-compliance of duty timing notices to senior professors several times and similarly, doctors’ non-serious attitude was also brought into notice of Vice Chancellor of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) and Principal Dow Medical College (DMC), but all the efforts went in vain. They said only two professors attend OPD patients in hospital on daily basis, while rest of doctors could not bother to turn in OPDs in these hours.
The patients generally attended by Post Graduates (PGs) and house job officers in different OPDs in rush hours. The on-call doctors above the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) remained absent from emergency ward and they are being called from wards and homes in case of any emergency.
The most of senior doctors of emergency department are preferred to examine the patients in their respective departments/wards instead of sitting in emergency wards which cause great inconvenience to patients and their attendants. The anger prevailed among the heirs of patients against senior doctors behaviours.
Sources said seniors doctors of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) remained present in emergency department and attended the OPD patients, but this exercise could not be done in civil hospital.
MS CHK Prof M Saeed Quraishi, when contacted, said handling the senior professors is the responsibility of VC DUHS and Principal DMC and such questions should be asked from them regarding their non-serious attitude in duty hours.
Principal DMC Prof Junaid Ashraf could not attend the repeated calls regarding the issue.
