KARACHI: The city administration has failed to manage vehicular parking as motorbikes, cars and loading vehicles can be seen scattered in every business street in the city. In absence of properly managed charged parking, illegal charged parking mafia has emerged to loot the citizens under patronage of policemen when people are flocking for shopping before Eidul Fitr.
From Rs20 to Rs30 are being charged for motorbikes instead of Rs5 and from Rs50 to Rs250 are being charged instead of Rs20 for cars and other vehicles, many times more than KMC fixed fee, by illegal charged parking mafia. This should also be noted that the biggest charged parking plaza of Pakistan is lying vacant in the heart of Karachi due to unknown reasons.
On the other hand, Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui claims to start planning for improved charged parking.
“Planning has been started to improve charged parking for the ease of public and the betterment of traffic in Karachi,” he said on Wednesday while addressing Karachi Divisional Traffic Management Board meeting at his office.
Additional IG Traffic Police Khadim Hussain Bhatti, Additional Commissioner Karachi I Javed Sibghatullah Mehr, representative of COMKAR Captain Pakistan Navy Muhammad Rizwan, Deputy Commissioner South Saleem Rajput, Director Planning and Development Commissioner Office Syed Muhammad Shakib, Director Sindh Building Control Authority Qazi Mumtaz, Secretary Regional Transport Authority Manshad Ali, director military land, SSP traffic South and director charged parking were also present on the occasion.
Karachi Divisional Traffic Management Board team said that it had included charged parking in their priority agenda to maintain discipline in parking and reducing traffic pressure on roads by removing hurdles.
The meeting decided that traffic police should point out damaged roads and encroachments becoming hurdle in easy flow of traffic.
“Initially, improvement work will be executed on the three main and busy arteries of the city Shahra e Faisal, Abdullah Haroon Road and MA Jinnah Road. Road signs would be installed, lane marking and zebra crossing will be made which will help improve traffic system,” he said.
The commissioner said mutual harmony among the relevant organizations was required for bringing improvement in traffic system.
