City admn urged to fulfill Eid Milad-un-Nabi requisites

KARACHI: “If all the requirements of providing facilities are not met this time for Eid Milad-un-Nabi, then a protest movement would be started against Karachi administration after 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal,” warned a Sunni Tehreek representative in a meeting with Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhter Farooqui regarding reviewing arrangements of Eid Milad on Wednesday at Civic Center.

Many representatives of other Sunni (Brelvi) organizations shook their heads for approval of this demands. Scores of issues were raised back-to-back on the occasion by representatives of different organizations such as cleanliness, water scarcity, encroachments, shortage of traffic police staff during processions, patchwork/ carpeting of roads on procession routes, repairing of sewerage lines and overflowing of gutters and stray dogs.

Representative of Nizam-e-Mustufa Party pointed out that the situation of sewerage system from Sohrab Goth to Gul Plaza was pathetic which had also damaged the road which must be repaired forthwith.

President Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan Karachi Qazi Ahmed Noorani said: “City is littered with garbage everywhere.”

He said that the administrator should come out of his office to personally supervise works and resolve public problems, otherwise such meetings were simply wastage of time.

Representative of Jammat Ahl-e-Sunnat Pakistan regretted that how could the administration resolve issues in a few days while he had submitted application regarding repairing of roads in Malir and Shah Faisal Town on December 15th to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and then in a meeting with the commissioner Karachi, however, no heed was paid to that matter yet.

MQM Member National Assembly Iqbal Muhammed Ali Khan said that it was unfortunate that nobody was going to take responsibility for the city, however, Farooqui had assured settlement of all the issues for the big event.

He said corruption should be eliminated from the local government departments so that the issue of shortage of funds could be resolved. He also said that minorities should be facilitated on the occasion of Christmas as well.

The administrator said the goal of the meeting was to ensure fulfilling the requirements during processions on war-footing basis.

Replying to a comment regarding better facilitation during Muharram in comparison with Rabi-ul-Awwal, he said that the administration never compared the two occasions as both were very important. In fact it wished to fully facilitate people on both the occasions on equal basis.

“We do not get special funds for the events, still, we manage things within the present budget considering it worship to work on these auspicious occasions. Our officers and workers remain under pressure to fulfill the demands. Egoistic approach should not be adopted and work should be done with collective efforts,” he said.

Farooqui said street lights from every pole could not be provided, however, it would be ensured that darkness was not prevalent.

He acknowledged that had the meeting been conducted a couple of weeks ago, it would have been better to arrange things in proper order, however he said that due to some compulsion, it could not be possible. “We should understand each others’ issues”.

The administrator justified the situation of Karachi Water & Sewerage Board and said that it also did not have much funds to meet the demands.
