KARACHI:,,, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah who was also the Chairman Thar Coal Energy Board (TCEB) has said that Thar Coal Project is enjoying the ownership equally from federal and provincial government.
He said that Sindh government was actively implementing the coal based power projects under the joint venture with national and international investment organizations to generate the power most probably to be started from 2017-18.
This he observed while presiding over a meeting of Thar Coal Energy Board at CM House Karachi today. Federal Minister for Information Pervaiz Rasheed, Advisor to CM Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, Sindh Minister Rubina Qaimkhani, Sindh Minister Syed Ali Mardan Shah, Sindh Minister Zakat, Chief Secretary Sindh Sajjad Saleem Hotiyana, Principal Secretary to CM Alamdin Bullo, MD Thar Coal Energy Board and other members of TCEB attended the meeting.
Addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister Sindh said that the foundation stone of the coal power project was laid down by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and ex-President Asif Ali Zardari that reflected and accorded the national importance to this project.
He said that Thar coal area posses qualitative coal reserves which were even recognized by international forum at USA in a workshop. He said that Thar coal has potential to bring the whole country out of power crises.
He said that at present different coal based power projects were being implemented by national and international power companies under the joint venture. The Chief Minister Sindh also constituted a technical committee headed by MD Thar Coal with two members from private sector for early finalizing the efficient mechanism for Thar coal tariff determination and asked committee to make it simplified which could be turned back within two to three months.
Addressing the meeting, the Federal Minister for Information offered full support from federal government for inviting investment, implementing on the coal base power project. He also informed the meeting that federal government in its CCI meeting had taken positive decisions about establishment of coal based power projects in the country.
He said that federal government would assist for establishing coal based power project by providing required infrastructure and fast track official proceedings. He said that power crises were the challenge to the nation and we all have to combat it with joint efforts and organizational steps.
The meeting was informed that there were many investment companies which either had expressed this interest or entered into agreement bringing total investment up to $ 7 to 8 billion.
The Board after detailed discussion decided that conversation of oil based power plants to the Thar coal based and recommended that new power plants should be designed on the Thar coal specification.
The Board recommended for early implementation of the Thar-Jamshoro transmission line to restore the confidence of investors. The Thar Coal Energy Board under amendment in its Act had empowered it to issue LOI to the project having share of Sindh government and it recommended to the federal government.
The Board expressed its satisfaction over the ongoing work on the infrastructure including supply of water, construction of airport and roads net. The meeting was informed that 67% work of the Ist schemes of water supply had been completed while work on other two schemes was also in progress. The Chief Minister Sindh assured the investing companies for providing fool proof security to them.
