KARACHI: Provincial Health Department on Tuesday constituted a committee for eradicating naegleria from Karachi.
Following the death of two persons from brain-eating naegleria fowleri, the health department Sindh constituted a Joint Action Committee for eradicating naegleria and ensuring proper chlorination of water supplied across the city.
The committee member comprised Deputy Secretary Health, Chief Engineer Karachi Water and Sewerage Board, a representative from Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) Food & Quality Control and a representative from Executive District Health Karachi office.
The committee will evolve a coordinated strategy to deal with the issue. Last year, at least 11 people had lost their lives because of naegleria fowleri, while two suspected cases were also reported in previous years.
It was pertinent to mention here that two persons died from naegleria fowleri in a month. 37-years-old Farooq Mir, resident of Clifton area of Karachi died naegleria fowleri in a private hospital last week, while, earlier an 18-years-old girl, a resident of Gulistan-e-Jauhar, died due to naegleria fowleri disease, also in a private hospital.
