Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhter Farooqui, Deputy Commissioner South Mustafa Jamal Qazi, Administrator District Municipal Corporation (DMC) South Afzal Zaidi, Senior Director Municipal Services Masood Alam, Director General Technical Services Niaz Ahmed Soomro, concerned officials of DMCs, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and Karachi Water & Sewerage Board were also present.

Government has taken notice of the situation and the municipal bodies are given 15 days to take necessary measures for bringing improvement in the situation after which, he said, he would again visit the city and action will be taken against the concerned officer in case of unsatisfactory work.

The chief secretary observed that no substantial results were so far yielded despite continuous work on storm water drains since many months. The concerned bodies were advised that KMC, KW&SB and all other civic bodies including the offices of deputy commissioner should make joint efforts for drains cleaning and give preference to the work over others by utilizing all the available resources. More resources would be provided to these organizations, if needed.

He asked the citizens to refrain from dumping garbage in drains as this could become dangerous for human life.

Hotiana said it was citizen’s right that the city was kept clean and we were responsible to perform work for this efficiently for which efforts were on. He said the work was being carried out by the local bodies department; however, it seemed that they too have not been able to make it.

He said solid waste management was considered a science, therefore, scientific methods were being adopted in all big cities of the world for lifting and disposal of solid waste but here we still were using the old system of disposal of garbage which could not solve issues, that’s why the Sindh government had established the Solid Waste Management Board to organize the solid waste management on scientific basis which would start working in the current fiscal year and would bring positive changes.

The chief secretary said presently KMC and DMCs were removing garbage and silt from drains and citizens were dumping it in drains, problems would increase if this process continued. Therefore, citizens should behave and not dump garbage or other waste in drains. He said the condition was unsatisfactory; however the government would bring improvement in it.

He said lifting of garbage was the responsibility of local bodies and this would remain their domain; however the government would provide them with whatever resources they needed.
