Denial to provide NICOP to Altaf: MQM seeks explanation from NADRA, interior minister

KARACHI:,,, Muttahida Qaumi Movement on Thursday sought explanation from NADRA and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan for not issuing National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOP) to its chief Altaf Hussain.

Addressing a press briefing at MQM Headquarters,90, along with coordination committee members, MQM leader Haider Abbas Rizvi said that Altaf Hussain had submitted his passport application on April 4 and NADRA officials also took his photographs and fingers prints and issued an receipt to him in this regard.

“Altaf Hussain paid £64 and fulfilled all formalities for getting his NICOP,” he said adding that Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Tasneem Aslam also acknowledged receiving Altaf Hussain’s application while Pakistan Ambassador in UK, Wajid Shamsul Hassan, witnessed the entire process.

Rizvi said that it requires two weeks to issue NICOP to the applicant, however, in this case five weeks have passed but MQM Chief had not yet received his identity card.

“Altaf Hussain was forced to live in exile due to suppression and if he is not a Pakistani then who other from us is a Pakistani,” he said.

MQM leader said that it was the responsibility of NADRA and interior ministry to facilitate people in getting passport and NICOP but it was shameful act that they were depriving a person of his basic right. “It will be against constitution if Altaf Hussain was not given passport and NICOP,” he said.

He criticized Additional Interior Secretary for saying that he did not receive passport application and said that if they had not received application, then how they provided receipt to MQM chief.

Rizvi criticized government for sacking NADRA staff in London over facilitating Altaf Hussain in taking his thumbprints and photos, and said that Pakistan high commission website in London states that NADRA staff could come to the applicant over request from the applicant.
