KARACHI: Initiating drive against negligent drivers who have no driving licence was not aimed at increasing panic among citizens, but the Karachi Traffic Police Department wanted to increase sense of responsibility among these negligent drivers behind 75 percent accidents in the city, said DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Tuesday.
Talking to PPI, Dr Amir said these drivers are road killers, so they need proper training. He regretted that 65 percent of drivers are bypassing procedures for getting licence in the metropolis.
DIG said action against drivers without licences would not be stopped but it would be taken in the form of imposing challan if any driver is found without licence as per the traffic law while these drivers will not be sent to Jails till three months.
DIG informed that at least 865 drivers without licences had been challaned by traffic police in a week. He said : “It is our misfortunate that we do not want to bring things in order unless any untoward incident occurs.” He said it does not mean that if anything is flowing in wrong direction then we should not stop it fearing that it might disturb the system. He said wrong is wrong and right is right so we as nation should support right things if we really want to make things better and in right direction.
Karachi Traffic Police Department needs support from civil society as it is bringing better traffic system in the metropolis, DIG added.
