Drive against Act: Education activities in several universities suspended for indefinite time

KARACHI: Educational activities on Monday remained suspended in University of Karachi and many other varsities across Sindh as teachers of these institutions started indefinite strike against Sindh Universities Act 2013.

Talking to PPI, Secretary General Karachi University Teachers Society Assistant Prof Muhammad Muiz Khan said that education activates were totally suspended for indefinite time in several universities working under Sindh government including University of Karachi, NED University of Engineering and Technology, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, University of Sindh, Tando Jam Agriculture University, Quaid-e-Awam Engineering University Nawabshah and Shah Latif University Khairpur.

To a question, he said that Dawood University of Engineering and Technology and Sindh Madrasat-ul-Islam University were not observing the strike as there were no elected teachers associations.

Khan, who is also Provincial General Secretary of Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Associations (FAPUASA), said that in August 2013, when Sindh Assembly passed Sindh University Act 2013, universities teachers had protested over some sections of it as these sections providing some basic powers of universities to provincial government such as appointment of Controller or Examination, Registrar and Director Finance.

He said that Sindh government had assured them that it would never use these powers while the Act would also be amended so that the powers be given to the universities again but now Sindh government had started using these powers by publishing advertisement for appointment of Directors Finance and Registrars.

He said that suspension of educational activities would be continued until the powers are not given to the universities.

Moreover, teachers association of Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), has supported the strike and demanded of the Sindh government to withdraw the advertisement immediately.

FUUAST teachers also expressed solidarity with their colleagues by wearing black armbands while black flag was also hoisted in Abdul Haq Campus of the university.
