KARACHI: After the drive against unlicensed drivers, traffic authorities on Thursday announced another drive in collaboration with Sindh Transport Department against taxis and rickshaws with no meters, as they are heavily overcharging passengers in the metropolis.
It is mandatory for all taxis and rickshaws to get installed taximeters so that commuters could be fairly charged as per their meters’ reading, said DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh.
The DIG said they have already written an official letter to Sindh Transport Department’s Secretary Taha Farooqui to issue taximeters and rickshaw-meters to all such public transport vehicles soon so that they could not overcharge Karachiities.
Dr Amir said, in the first phase action would be taken against taxis running without meters and overcharging public.
He said when passengers ask taxi drivers to charge fare as per meter, they pretend that their meters are out of order. He said there is dire need of taking action against these vehicles as every day commuters are seen fighting with taxi drivers on the issue of overcharging of fare which is sadly a routine in Karachi.
The DIG said there is a rule for taxi drivers to charge commuters as per the fare list issued by Sindh Transport Department but they are seen freely violating the rule. He said he has directed officials to take stern action against such drivers as per law.
