KARACHI: Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhtar Farooqui said on Monday that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) was going to start an engineering college in the city in next three months. The college would be affiliated with NED Engineering University of Engineering the Technology.
He said that it would be the first of its kind engineering college established by any municipal body in the country. NED University has given approval for the affiliation with this college and the new engineering college would prove a standard institution like the Karachi Medical & Dental College (KMDC) run by KMC.
He expressed these views while inspecting the under construction building of engineering college in Korangi where he was given a detailed briefing about the college.
The administrator said the basic thing was affiliation with a standard education institution and the NED University has given green light for this.
In the first phase electronic and information technology classes would begin in this college after which classes in civil and technical subjects would start next year and these disciplines would be added gradually. He said this college would be a gift from KMC for the people of Landhi, Korangi and other adjoining areas.
“The admissions will be given purely on merit basis, just like it has been successfully done in KMDC,” he said
Regarding development activities in the Landhi and Korangi Farooqui said it was no more a suburban area but a part of the city and KMC has carried out many big uplift projects here and many of them were already completed. “This college was the need of this area and the city which would be run by an educational society as a governing board and this board will have the well offs of the city and the professional experts as its members.”
He said technical education was a symbol of progress that is why we should encourage our youths towards the engineering and technical sector as it was done in all over the world which not only helps controlling joblessness but also paves way for progress and prosperity in any country.
He said KMC has, despite having limited resources, taken steps for providing quality education in medical, engineering and other technical disciplines to our youths.
Farooqui on this occasion thanked the Governor of Sindh Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan and the elected representative of this area Asif Husnain for their support and efforts for obtaining approval of this engineering college and then its affiliation with the NED University.
