Govt urged to focus on worsening water, sanitation situation

Karachi: A moot here urged the provincial government of Sindh to focus on the worsening situation of water and sanitation to save citizens from communicable diseases.

As per details, NGO HANDS in collaboration with the Sindh government and USAID arranged a seminar on Urban WASH in Karachi.

Dr. Shaikh Tanveer Ahmed, CEO HANDS, speaking on the occasion said that there is a need to restatement the provincial commitments towards water & sanitation by appraising the present situation of Urban WASH and finalizing provincial action plan highlighting a set of practical and measureable actions, achieving outcomes and targets of SDG’s related to water sanitation and hygiene in systemic manner.

He said that there 80% people have no access to safe drinking water and they are facing difficulties about sanitation as well; 25 million people are going for open defecation.

John Smith Sreene, USAID Deputy Mission Director Sindh & Balochistan said that USAID is investing on water sectors. Water, sanitation and health and hygiene issues are on top priority of USAID for next five years.

Shireen Narejo, Secretary Planning & Development said that Sindh government is struggling to overcome the water and sanitation crisis in Sindh and also redesigning policies. Sanitation policy is a great achievement of Sindh Government, she said.
