JI holds demo at Sohrab Goth against water shortage, demands ending ‘artificial crisis’

Karachi: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) held a protest demo against persisting acute water shortage in the city at Sohrab Goth, Superhighway here on Monday.

Protestors carrying placards and banners chanted slogans against Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and local government department Sindh, demanding emergency steps to resolve the water shortage issue.

JI District East chapter amir ex-MPA Mohammad Yunus Barai addressing the demo said the ongoing water crisis in the city was artificial and the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party and its ex-partner Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) were responsible for this water crisis. He said the ultimate beneficiary of the ongoing water crisis is the water tanker mafia and it is open secret which ruling parties patronize this mafia. He said the government is not serious in resolving the water issue. Had it really serious it would have implemented the K-4 project, a brainchild of former Karachi mayor Niamatullah Khan Advocate many years ago.

He said that both PPP and MQM were responsible for the water shortage and they are also shedding the crocodile tears on this issue. He asked them to stop politicizing the water issue and tender apology to the Karachiites for their failure to start the K-4 project during their long tenures in provincial government. He asked to annul 10000 fake recruitments in the KWSB and fill these posts through Sindh Public Service Commission on merit basis. He asked to get repaired the leaking water lines and improve failed sewerage system in the city which is spreading diseases amongst Karachiites. He demanded to take action against corrupt officials of local government department as well as KWSB, KMC and other civic agencies. He asked to rein in the KE which is ruining the economy of Karachi with its unbridled load shedding, especially in the slum areas of the city.

JI Universities Zone chapter amir Muzaffar Iqbal in his address said the slum areas of Karachi have been braving acute water shortage. He said the poor and deserving people are not getting any benefit from the free of cost water tanker service, which he termed a ploy to benefit the water tanker mafia on the cost of taxpayers. He demanded supplying water through pipelines to all areas of the city, start and complete K-4 project on war footing and plan now the water needs of the city for coming years.

The speakers also flayed KE for its load shedding, over-billing and tormenting electricity consumers of Karachi.
