Karachi beach awaits cleaning, facelift

KARACHI: Karachi beach could be made one of the most beautiful beaches of the region that could earn huge revenue for the government provided it is properly cleaned and given some facelift.

Beach cities all over the world are considered tourist attractions and they give their countries soft image and huge revenues by promoting tourist industry; however, Karachi despite its beautiful natural beach cannot attract local and foreign visitors because it is dismally unclean and very poorly developed.

Clifton Beach or SeaView is the main beach in Karachi, located on the Arabian Sea. It was the world’s most popular silver-sand beach and health resort during 20th century but in 2003 it was affected by an oil spill. The beach has attractions for families and tourists, including beachside horse and camel rides, amusement parks, restaurants, and swimming in the Arabian Sea.

The main reason why Karachi beach is unclean and dirty is the discharge of untreated gutter water of the city, as well as, industrial wastes into it. Karachi is one of the largest cities of the world with a population of more than 24million, but it lacks proper facilities of treating gutter water and industrial wastes and hence millions of gallons of untreated water and tons of solid and liquid industrial and municipal wastes are released mercilessly into the sea, making the Karachi beach an unhygienic place to visit.

It is said that each day 500 million gallons of raw sewage or untreated industrial waste from the city flows into the sea, badly affecting its beach. Moreover, 15,000 tons of solid waste is dumped or washes into the sea each day. The civic agencies marred with corrupt and inefficient officials mostly recruited due to their affiliation to the ruling parties do not have the vision or capacity to fight this pollution and take the needed steps to make their city beach and clean and healthy recreation spot for the citizens as well as the visitors.

All over the world no entry ticket is charged from the people visiting the city gardens or beaches but not so in Karachi where the beachgoers have to pay entry charges. This should be done away with and the citizens should be given a chance to visit their beach and beachside gardens without paying any ticket or fee.

The government agencies should realize the social and economic importance of Karachi beach and take all-out efforts to make it clean, stop release of untreated water to it, erect more beach benches and sheds for the visitors, provide drinking water, parking and washroom facilities to the visitors and mostly importantly plant hundreds of thousands of beach palm trees there to make the Karachi beach a lovely recreation site.
