Karachi generates 15,000 tons garbage daily

KARACHI:,,, Administrator Karachi Rauf Akhter Farooqui said on Wednesday that district municipal corporations were responsible for disposal of garbage in the city; however, KMC would support and cooperate with every measure which was aimed at keeping the city clean and providing basic facilities to citizens.

Private sector will be provided with all possible assistance for the betterment of city’s solid waste management system, he said while talking to a 4-member delegation of American Princeton Environmental Group Inc which met him in his office on Tuesday.

The group which has huge experience of working in the field of solid waste management in many big cities of the world was nowadays reviewing the solid waste disposal and generating electricity from waste in Karachi. The delegation led by its president Peter Tien gave a briefing to administrator Karachi regarding the project.

Administrator Karachi on this occasion said Karachi the 6th biggest city of the world with about 25 million population offers a huge market for investment. The city generates more than 15,000 tons of garbage and waste daily, however due to insufficient resources all of this was not being disposed of to landfill sites and this garbage was left in the drains, empty plots and dumping yards.

Cleaning Karachi without having cooperation and coordination of private sector was a big challenge. Therefore, KMC would welcome any such step and cooperate all level for cleaning Karachi. The American Group leader Peter Tien said PEG holds vast experience in disposing of garbage and generating electricity from it and it had completed many such projects in other big cities of the world. We want to induct the same model in Karachi for which the feasibility could be prepared soon.
