Karachi’s licence branches witness 80% rise in new drivers

KARACHI: The rush at Karachi’s licence branches is due to 80 percent rise in new drivers who are applying for learner licences as per the data in all three branches of Karachi Licence Department, said DIG Licence Department Aftab Pathan on Thursday.

DIG said all licence branches had been issuing licences at their maximum capacity. He said Clifton branch was used to issue only 180 licences per day, but now it is issuing 850 licences, Nazimabad branch used to issue 150 licences which is now issuing 650 licences, while Korangi branch is issuing up to 300 licences in a day.

Aftab said it had been officially decided that at least 100 licence centres would be established in Karachi’s different areas soon, and till that they had no other option for giving extra time to new comers. “We are requesting them to re-visit after two months so that they could ensure transparency in issuing licences to right people.”

DIG said they had extended office timings and sitting capacity of candidates in all three branches and are working 24/7 in a week. Aftab asked that if anyone is suffering difficulty while getting licence, he/she could contact their main Clifton branch so that their issues could be resolved on priority basis. He said he had already directed officials concerned to give extra room to female candidates, while Sunday would remain open for female candidates only.
