KARACHI: Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has alerted Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and other relevant organizations about expected rains and warned to take immediate actions to save people from the loss of lives and properties due to rains. In this connection, implementation of emergency plans should be ensured.
“Met Department has predicted rains in the second week of July in Karachi. The intensity of rains could not be determined now, however it can be heavy rains,” he said while addressing a meeting at his office to review safety measures from the loss of expected rains.
Different decisions were taken in the meeting for ensuring implementation of emergency plans made by local government departments.
Additional Commissioner Karachi I Javed Sibghatullah Mehr, Director Local Government Rubina Asif, officers and representatives of KMC, district municipal corporations, cantonment boards, K-Electric, Met Department, Sui Southern Gas Company and other civic organizations were also present on the occasion.
Complaints of non-cleanliness of rainwater drains in different areas including Manzoor Colony, Macchar Colony, Lyari, Korangi and Nazimabad were discussed and it was decided in the meeting that KMC and other relevant organizations should immediately take notice of the complaints and take emergency measures to clean them and submit report on it to commissioner Karachi.
The representative of Met Department told the meeting that rains were expected in the second week of July, however nothing could be said about heavy rains at the moment. Meanwhile, he requested the meeting to alert the municipal services department so that any untoward situation could be dealt with.
The meeting decided that KE would safeguard people from electricity wires during rains on war footing and start an awareness campaign in this regard.
The meeting was told that arrangements were made on all the sewerage pumping stations to tackle any situation. It was also decided that forthright actions should be taken to save people for accidents of hoardings and billboards. All the hospitals had been issued alerts.
“All the hospitals should take steps against dengue spread after rains, while KWSB should fulfill the need of chlorination of water so that the citizens could be made secure from naegleria. Sindh Building Control Authority should take steps to safeguard people from old deteriorating buildings,” the meeting decided.
