KARACHI: Special Secretary Health Dr Khalid Hussain Shaikh on Wednesday said that Sindh Health Department has constituted a six- member focal group to formulate strategy for control of Naglaria Fowleri with following composition:
Deputy Chief Engineer, KW&SB Azam Khan would be the convener of this focal group while DDO Food Quality Control Department KMC Irfan Khan, OSD Health Department Zafar Mehdi, Assistant Executive Engineer Public Health Engineering Department Syed Nazir Haider, Executive Engineer District Council Karachi Liaquat Ali Mughal and a representative of Director Health Services Karachi would act as its member.
He further informed that Nagleria Prevention Centre (NPC) at COD Filtration Plant would be the focal point for testing and working out strategy on daily basis. The group would meet daily at NPC and plan action on samples from various localities of the city and its proper testing, he added.
Dr Shaikh also informed that it would order immediate chlorination wherever required, and the vulnerable areas will be given special attention. The focal group would jointly review the samples and would also be responsible for releasing information to the media in order to avoid any confusion in this regard.
The Health Department has written another letter to KW&SB, asking for ensuring chlorination of potable water according to the recommendations of World Health Organization (WHO) as there have been two deaths reported from Karachi in 2015.
There is no proper treatment available for the patients of Nagleria Fowleri but this disease is 100 percent preventable by adopting simple precautionary measures, the letter added.
He further said that the health department’s role in controlling the disease is limited only to public awareness, hospitalization, diagnosis and its differentiation from other causes of meningitis. The KW&SB should constitute teams for testing water samples of various areas of Karachi to ensure required level of chlorine, the letter concluded.
