Need stressed to train young scholars

Karachi: Training of young research scholars is essential to improve the quality research, said Prof. Muhammad Qaiser, Vice Chancellor, University of Karachi in his presidential address at the concluding ceremony of the 3-day workshop on “Planning, Execution and Successful Accomplishment of Research Degrees” for research students and their supervisors organized by Dr. A. Q. Khan Institute of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering (KIBGE), University of Karachi.

The workshop was designed for those who are intending to embark on a research program. This workshop introduced young researchers and their supervisors to the system and, by increasing their understanding, helped them improve the choice of university, institution, department, area of research and supervisor.

Prof. Kaleem Raza Khan, the resource person of the workshop congratulated the participants for taking an active part in this workshop, throughout the days. Prof. Khan promised to be a part of next activity of that kind at KIBGE.

Prof. Jamil Kazmi, Professor, Department of Geography said that he was delighted to be a resource person of the workshop. He also appreciated the involvement of junior faculty members and young scholars to seek and learn the tools and techniques to do responsible research.

Dr. Muhammad Afzal, another resource person of the workshop, former Director General, PASTIC, Islamabad and former Editor-in-Chief, Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal (EMHJ)-World Health Organization (WHO) showed his enthusiasm to see the more of active learning activities at KIBGE. He said that this was a great opportunity for both, the participants as well as the resource persons to seek and learn regarding the research process.

The participants were of opinion that this activity was of a great benefit for them to choose the research area and topic, planning and execution of targeted research on that particular area and then in the end writing it up in the form of research thesis and research papers. They intended to attend more workshops like this from the resource person in near future.

Earlier Prof. Abid Azhar, Dean, Faculty of Science and Director General, KIBGE, delivered the welcome address explained the aims and objectives of the workshop. He informed that over 200 students, researchers, faculty members and industry personnel from 50 different organizations, universities, colleges, industries, and departments of University of Karachi took part in this 3-days activity.

The workshop was conducted by Prof. Moonis Ahmar, Dean, Faculty of Arts, University of Karachi, Prof. Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhary, Director, ICCBS, University of Karachi, Prof. Anwar Ali Siddiqui, Director, Research Office, The Aga Khan University, Karachi, Prof. Arif Siddiqui, Former Chairperson, Department of Chemistry, University of Karachi, Prof. Jamil Hasan Kazmi, Department of Geography, University of Karachi, Dr. Muhammad Afzal, Former Director, PASTIC, Islamabad, Prof. Ejaz Ahmed, Dean, Computer Sciences, Institute of Business and Management (IoBM), Karachi and Prof. Kaleem Raza Khan, Chairperson, Department of English, University of Karachi.
