KARACHI: Over 250 posts are vacant in National Institute of Child Health (NICH) while hundreds of employees have been waiting for their promotions since last five years, PPI learnt on Wednesday.
Sources at NICH on condition of anonymity said NICH is a 500-bed institution and considered one of the largest children hospitals of the province of Sindh. It provides tertiary care service for almost all types of paediatric diseases and is equipped with latest diagnostic gadgetries.
They said for last five years, the hospital administration is facing multiple challenges after the devolution of healthcare to Sindh province. They informed that over 250 posts of doctors, paramedics, nursing staff and other technical vacancies are vacant in the institution as no new recruitment has been done to fill them.
They informed that hundreds of employees are waiting for their promotions as no departmental promotion committee meeting could be held in past five years in the institution. Dozens of employees were retired from their jobs, some left jobs and a some medical staff joined other national and international health institutions due to lack of promotion and other reasons.
They said uncertainty prevails among doctors, nurses and paramedical staff, and employees are discharging their duties half-heartedly. The patient care has also been declined in the institution as compared to past.
Director NICH Prof Jamal Raza, when contacted, said a request has been sent to the provincial health department for hiring against vacant posts and promotions of employees in the NICH. He hoped that health department would grant permission to the administration soon.
