Patients suffer as ACs not functioning at CHK

Karachi: Air Conditioners (ACs) of Emergency & Accident Department, Civil Hospital Karachi, are not functioning since long which has increased miseries of patients and emergency handling doctors.

An official of Emergency Department on condition of anonymity said Edhi Foundation had donated six split air conditioners to department in 2012 out of which four had developed fault. He said now only two ACs are functioning in emergency department while four others were out of order. The administration do not bother to get these ACs repaired despite complaints by patients.

He said over dozen of patients with severe injuries are brought to Sindh’s largest healthcare for emergency treatment on daily basis. He said warm weather had increased the miseries of patients and doctors tackling the emergency cases. He said it seemed that administration had turned blind eye on the issue as they had no concern about the problems being faced by patients.

He said MS and other administrative officers were enjoying AC rooms while patients were in trouble. He said cold water was also not available in hospital as patients have been compelled to buy bottled water. He said provincial government had increased 20 percent health budget for fiscal year 2014-15 which was nothing but a jugglery of words.

Secretary General Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Centre Mirza Ali Azhar has said maintenance of air conditioners installed in healthcare is necessary to provide relief to patients. He said the administration should give consideration in maintenance of ACs in hospital to improve health delivery system.

Medical Superintendent CHK Prof Muhammad Saeed Qureshi was busy in operation when contacted to get his comment.
