PFF calls action against landlord

KARACHI: Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) has condemned the brutal act of a landlord of Sinjhoro, Sanghar district, who ran vehicle to hit a young peasant worker to take revenge on Monday morning, while farmer was proceeding to the field. In result the farmer, Haji Sobho, received serious injuries and was shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad for treatment.

PFF spokesman Ramzan Mallah accused the influential landlord, belonging to Village Deh 40 Jamrao near Sinjhoro, of adopting this bitter approach to kill the poor worker. The victim farmer’s crime is that he asked landlord for his right to crop share as per the law.

The landlord had already sent a message to farmer families to leave his land without taking their share and in case they raised voice they will be killed mercilessly, Mallah said in a statement issued just after the incident.

He said farmers asked the landlord to give them share of wheat crop. On refusal by the landlord, the farmers lodged a case with Assistant Commissioner, who is head of the Tenancy Tribunal, Sinjhoro pleading to help in getting the share of crop from the landlord. However, the assistant commissioner as usual responded poorly in which the influential landlord threatened his farmers to leave their abodes, standing crops and withdraw share instantly otherwise they will face dire consequences.

This act was the part of the threat, the enraged farmers said. The farmers reached the police station to lodge FIR against the landlord for his crime of attacking the farmer, but police refused to register case. The irony is that, the Sinjhoro police treated landlord as guest.

Reports reaching here revealed that this act has panicked the farmers and civil society activists who condemned the brutal act and appealed to the provincial government to ensure protection to farmers.

PFF leaders also appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan and Sindh High Court to take action against such cruel action and protect the farmers, as their lives and livelihoods are at stake. PFF spokesman said armed men of landlords are on rampage in the area threatening the poor farmer families of facing dire consequences.
