KARACHI: Kohat police claimed to have succeeded in tracing out the murder of journalist Hafeezur Rehman, the Chief Editor of a local newspaper Nawa-i-Asia, Correspondent of Neo news, and President of Cable TV Network Owners Association, who was shot dead by unknown assailants in Kalo Khan Banda, Kohat on November 22, 2015.
According to police investigation, the journalist was killed by his brother Asim Naeem in connivance with three hired assassins. The police investigators probed the murder case from various angles and turned able to trace it by identifying the accused through cellular forensics.
They arrested the slain journalist’s brother and one of his accomplices, Muhtaram, from Kohat, while efforts were underway to arrest the remaining two assailants whose identities have been concealed by police for operational reasons. Police also claimed to have recovered a motorcycle used in the murder.
The slain journalist’s brother in his statement before the police stated that he hatched a plot to kill his brother. The accused brother confessed to the police that he murdered his brother for not paying him his share from inherited wealth, and instead he used to finance others.
During investigations, it was revealed that the culprits had been trying to kill the journalist since last five months during which they also attempted to poison him but failed to do so. After this failure, the deceased’s brother hired the accomplices at Rs 600,000. It was further revealed that the culprits also made a failed attempt on November 16, 2015, as the journalist Hafeez did not use the route where they had planned to ambush him.
It is pertinent to mention here that Rehman’s murder has raised serious concerns about the journalists’ security in the Kohat district. However, the timely investigation revealing family wealth issue as motive behind the murder and culprits’ arrest by police will certainly dispel the fears and apprehensions prevalent among journalists fraternity.
