KARACHI: At least 5552 internally displaced people had arrived from Waziristan in Karachi and polio campaign for stopping outbreak of the disease in the city would be initiated from July 5 to July 8, 2014.
This was informed to a meeting at Central Police office. It was attended by five-member delegation led by Chairperson for Healthcare & Polio Eradication Ms. Azra Pechohu, Ms. Shahnaz Wazir Ali and others that called on Addl. IGP Karachi Ghulam Qadir Thebo. It was informed to the meeting that about 5,552 North Waziristan IDPs (individuals) have already arrived at Karachi and their validation was in process.
It was briefed that due to the ongoing arrival process, more IDPs are expected in the city, which has created an imminent risk of intensive polio outbreaks and other infectious diseases as no vaccination campaigns were carried out in Waziristan since June 2012.
It was decided at the meeting that in order to avert significant risk of intensive poliovirus outbreak, additional vaccination will be initiated at Provincial Transit Points (PTPs).
The first polio vaccination campaign will begin from July 5 to July 8, 2014. Whereas second campaign from July 16 and third from August 16 to August 19, 2014. Additionally more 4 campaigns were also planned after 19 August till December 2014.
Additional IGP Karachi directed Police to ensure 300 security personnel specific for polio campaigns from 5 July till 31 December 2014, and extended all possible support in identification and mapping of areas in Karachi where IDPs settled.
