Potholed road creates traffic problems

Karachi: The pot-holed section of busy University Road from Karachi University to Safoora Chowrangi creates severe traffic problems irking hundreds of thousands motorists and commuters who use this broken road.

This section of road has gone broken due to poor standard of road-making. The road after the construction soon developed pot-holes but due to closer nexus of corrupt elements no inquiry was ordered. Later, several times, this section of road has seen patch-work repair, but the poor standard of repair and material used in it soon made new holes and cracks. Recently, these holes were filled with stones and earth to make it serviceable to some extent, but to no avail.

The condition of other sections of the University Road, particularly from Federal Urdu University to PIA Planetarium is very poor. Some parts of this road that gone broken soon after its inauguration, from Safari Park to the flyover near Sunday Bazaar flyover were repaired more than once. The gutter system near Samama Centre flyover often remains choked, damaging the road on both sides of the flyover, but again no one cares to save this section from damage and facilitate commuters and motorists.

In past the PIA had pledged to reconstruct the University Road from Hassan Square to Karachi Airport via New Race Course, but the project was silently kept on the back-burner.

It is dire need to get properly repaired the broken sections of the University Road, particularly from Samama Centre, and from Federal Urdu University to PIA Planetarium, on urgent basis to provide relief to the road-users.
