PWA organizes health carnival at CHK


Karachi: Patients Welfare Association (PWA) on Wednesday hosted its annual fundraising carnival “The Bake Sale 2014” to generate funds to be used for provision of free medical facilities to underprivileged patients at Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK).

Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tufail Chemical Industries Ltd, Zubair F Tufail, was the chief guest on this occasion. The event was held at Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK). The students of Dow Medical College are voluntarily running the bake sale event for generation of fund for destitute patients of Civil Hospital since 1979.

The students of Dow Medical College set up different stalls of flowers, cake, balloons, handicrafts, food and other items for sale in annual event of bake sale for fundraising purpose.

A PWA volunteer Urooj Siddiqui said PWA organize bake sale carnival every year with sole purpose of raising fund to provide treatment to poor patients suffering from Thalassemia, TB and other diseases.

She said PWA is the largest student-run non-governmental organization of Pakistan which is voluntarily run by the students of Dow Medical College. She said PWA was providing medical services free of cost to destitute patients of CHK.

A student, Nida Sehar, said main objective of establishment of stalls in bake sale carnival was to earn more and more money which would use for public health.

Since 1979, PWA is providing free of cost medical service to poor patients of Civil Hospital Karachi through its blood transfusion services with an annual output of around 90, 000 blood bags and TB & general follow up clinic with over 300 registered patients and Thalassemia services with 275 registered patients. The drug bank and diagnostic lab were also fulfilling the needs of countless patients every year.

The PWA had earned an amount Rs 1.7 million though annual bake sale last year and hoped that the amount would cross 2 million figure this year, said an organizer.

A large number of doctors, hockey star, TV anchors, students, media persons and dignitaries highly appreciated the efforts of students about fundraising in order to serve the poor patients.

Vice President PWA Dr Ehrima Fatima, Dr Areeba, Rija Sheikh, Urooj Siddiqui and Abeer Amina were also present on this occasion.
