Rallies in Sindh for revival of student unions
KARACHI:A movement for the restoration of student unions, under the auspices of Sindh Students’ Council (SSC), entered into next phase, when protests and rallies were held in whole province including Karachi and Hyderabad.
In Karachi, a number of students led by SSC Karachi organizers Saqlain Chandio and Hassnain Ahmed, carrying placards and banners, chanted slogans for the restoration of students union in Pakistan.
The protest was attended by students of Federal Urdu University of Arts, Science and Technology (FUUAST), Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto University of Law (ZABUL), NED University and Karachi University.
Speaking on the occasion, Saqlain said that revival of student unions is essential because they would help students to hone upt heir skills. ‘’Student unions will also promote democratic culture,’’ he said.
He said today students are facing many problems including hike in fees, lack of hostels, transport, and other necessities but there is no any leader to represent the students at national level and present their problems before ruling politicians and constitutional institutions.
Hasnain Ahmed also stressed the need of restoration of student unions.
In Hyderabad, a protest demonstration was led by SSC’s central organizers Asees Laghari, Sarkash Sindhi. They staged a rally was from Old Campus to Hyderabad Press Club.
Asseees Laghari addressing the rally said that SSC’s mission is to resolve problems of students and also to introduce new trends and traditions into politics in Sindh.
In Sakrand, a protest rally was taken out by SSC chief crganizer Aamir Umrani.
He said that for thirty five years, there is a a complete ban on political voice of the students. He said in civilised societies, students are encouraged to take part in democratic process, whereas, here even a legal and constitutional system like ‘student unions’ is banned. This ban has been suppressing the democratic process, and freedom of expression for last thirty five years, he said.
The protests and rallies were taken out in various cities and towns under the leadership of Aamir Umrani, Ayaz Parhyar and Asad Khoso in Sakrand, Sagar Jatoi in Qazi Ahmed, Aslam Sindhi in Sehwan, Halar Yasin in Phulji Station, Shahbaz Malik in Kandhkot, Pervez Sindhu in Mirpur Mathelo, Hafeez Umrani of Progressive Students Federation in Jamshoro, Shan Qureshi in Jati, and G M Khatti in Thatta.
