Saulat Mirza seeks reopening of KESC MD murder case

KARACHI: Death row convict Saulat Mirza has approached the Sindh High Court seeking court directives for the authorities concerned to reopen the murder case of the then managing director of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) to prosecute other accused.

The convict’s counsel had addressed a letter to the SHC Chief Justice, requesting him to take cognizance of life threats to his family and provide his family adequate security.

In a letter, counsel said that in his video message, Saulat confessed that he murdered the KESC managing director on the directions of MQM top leadership; therefore, he requested the court to issue directives for the relevant authorities to record his statement and prosecute other accused in the case. He said till disposal of the case, his execution be halted.

The counsel for the condemned prisoner, who is confined in Baluchistan’s Mach Jail, submitted that convict’s family was receiving death threats on cell phone from South Africa. He said that his family was well aware of the identity of the callers. He pleaded to the court to direct the SSP concerned to record her wife’s statement and register a case against them. The court was further pleaded to direct the Sindh government to put his family under police protection.

It may be noted that in recent past just hours before he was to be sent to the gallows, news channels aired a video of the convict in which he alleged that he murdered the Karachi Electric Supply Company’s former managing director on the orders of his Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) top leadership. Subsequently his execution was deferred and a joint investigation team was constituted to grill Mirza.

Saulat was sentenced to death by an anti-terrorism court in Karachi on May 24, 1999, for murdering the then managing director of the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC), his driver, and guard on July 5, 1997 in the Defence Housing Authority (DHA), a neighbourhood of Karachi.

The SHC had dismissed his appeal in 2000 whereas the Supreme Court also turned down his plea in 2001. A review petition was rejected by the apex court in 2004. The convict’s mercy appeal was recently rejected by the president.
