SBTA hails introducing SOFT screening test


Karachi: Consultant Haemotologist Dr Muhammad Usman of Muhammad Blood Bank and Thalassaemia Centre on Saturday hailed the government decision to provide Single Osmotic Fragility Test (SOFT) facility in all major public sector hospitals in Sindh for timely screening of thalassaemia patients.

In a statement, Dr Muhammad Usman said that instruction issued by the Secretary Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority (SBTA) Dr Zahid Ansari should be implemented in letter and spirit. He said the decision will be a great help to reduce number of thalassaemia patients in Pakistan.

He said Sindh Health Minister Dr Saghir Ahmed is also taking interest to make Sindh free of thalassaemia, which is appreciable. He said Muhammadi Thalassaemia Centre is providing free of cost services to more than 105 children suffering from this painful disease. He said: “We are also striving for a thalassaemia-free Pakistan.”
