School fee rise: SHC directs respondents to file comments

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Wednesday issued notices to Directorate of School Education, Department of Education & Literacy Sindh and the Beaconhouse School system’s management to file their comments on the petition challenging increase in fees.

The SHC bench, headed by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah, directed the school management not to expel the students on account of non-payment and to take regular fees from the students till the next hearing. The court took up the petition filed by Mehreen Ibrahim, a mother of children studying at the Beaconhouse School system DHA Phase VIII branch, who moved the court against school management for increasing fee against Sindh Private Educational Institutions Ordinance 2001.

The petitioner stated that her two children are studying at the Beaconhouse School system DHA Phase VIII branch but suddenly the management had increased the fee which is illegal.

She stated that they belong to middle class family but pays the fees on regular basis. Mehreen stated that she send her children to school with a hope of best future and is trying to provide them best educational facilities.

Citing chief secretary Sindh, directorate of School education, department of education & literacy and the Beaconhouse School system management as respondents, the petitioner prayed to the court to direct the authorities concerned to restrain the school management from increasing school fees.

The court was also requested by the petitioner to direct the management of the Generation School to follow the Sindh Private Educational Institutions Ordinance 2001 and increase the % of school fee according to it. After the initial hearing, the court issued notices to Attorney General and respondents to file their comments on 9th December.
