KARACHI: The Sindh High Court directed on Wednesday Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) anti-encroachment cell director and SP Saddar area to remove encroachment from Jehangir Park within three days.
A division bench headed by Justice Nadeem Akhtar required them to clear encroachments from the pavements around the park. It asked Nazir, an official of court, to supervise the anti-encroachment drive.
The court gave these directions while hearing two identical petitions seeking to remove the encroachment from Jehangir Park and restore it to its former status.
One of the petitioners Agha Syed Attaullah Shah submitted Jahangir Park located in Saddar Karachi is one of oldest and historical park of metropolis which was neglected by the authorities since last more than 16 years and consequently this park had turned into ruins and center of anti-social elements.
He submitted that that the park was now giving an abominable look, as the grass and trees have been removed from the park while the drivers have started parking their coaches in the park.
He stated that drug peddlers were frequently roaming in the park and illegal construction by the town offices, shops and mosques were on increase, adding many encroachments were made by private persons and KMC employees.
The petitioner submitted that iron fence around the park has also been broken from many places, while cleanliness condition of the park is also worst as one can see garbage and waste littered everywhere in the park.
Petitioner requested the court to direct the official respondents to immediately rehabilitate and beautify Jahangir Park and remove the encroachments.
