KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) has issued notice to home secretary, IGP Sindh and others to submit their comments on a petition calling for action against anti-social elements that are ruling the roost in Sherpao Basti, a neighbourhood of the city.
A SHC division bench headed by Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar had also summoned the comments from the federal and provincial law officers and set Jan 20 for the next hearing.
The petitioner stated that Sherpao Basti had become den of the unscrupulous and illegal activities including encroachments, smuggling and selling of weapons, drugs, snatched cars and motorcycles. The criminals were operating in the area under the nose of authorities concerned and local police, he added.
The petitioner alleged that authorities concerned were hand in glove with outlaws because they receive huge money from them. He added the presence of these elements in the area had posed serious threat to safety and security of the residents.
He submitted that around the area, there were sensitive military installations which have been attacked by these criminals in past but despite the fact no action was taken against them. He said he had approached all relevant authorities but his pleas fell on deaf ears each time.
The petitioner pleaded the court to issue directions to the authorities to clear the Sherpao Basti of these anti-social elements and also remove encroachments from amenity plots in the area.
