SHC restrains FUUAST acting VC from making major decisions till 1st Dec

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday restrained acting vice-chancellor (VC) of Federal Urdu University of Arts Science & Technology (FUUAST), Professor Suleman D Mohammad, from making appointments and transfers till 1st December.

SHC bench was hearing the petition filed by Engineer Farhan Ahmed who took FUUAST acting VC Suleman D Mohammad and Higher Education Commission (HEC) to the court, seeking the courts direction to restrain Prof Suleman from making administrative decisions as well as fresh appointments and transfers.

In Thursday’s hearing the lawyer from acting VC and FUUAST, Bashir Ahmed, requested the court to give him some time for filling counter-affidavit. The court while accepting his request adjourned the hearing of the petition till 1st December.

The court directed Prof Suleman to perform his routine work and day-to-day affairs of the varsity but till the next date he cannot make major decisions like fresh appointments and transfers of employees.

Earlier, the petitioner stated that Poof Sleman was appointed as acting VC of FUUAST and he cannot make administrative decisions of the varsity.

He stated that acting VC has no authority to make decisions which are beyond from day-to-day affairs. “Acting VC cannot make new appointments and transfer the employees,” the petitioner stated.

He further stated that under the relevant law there is no provision for appointing acting VC. He pointed out the letter written by HEC to Prof Suleman advising him to defer important policy decisions till the appointment of regular VC.
