KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Monday directed Karachi Central Prison authorities to place on record the jail roll of a lifer and remissions given to him.
Two-judge bench headed by Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi gave this direction while hearing a petition filed by Mateen Kamal Ansari, who has been in prison for 10 years. The bench issued notice to Home Secretary, IG Prison and others, asking them to submit comments on a petition.
Counsel for petitioner submitted that Mateen was given life-term by special court for Control of Narcotics Substances (CNS) in a narcotic case. He said that his client has obtained remissions including special remission of 4625 days.
He said that Mateen was entitled to be awarded three years’ education remission as he has passed various examinations including Hafiz-e-Quran, intermediate and oriental language examination in Urdu. He has undergone 10-year, one month and 24-day term and entitled to be released.
Petitioner’s counsel requested the court to order prison authorities to release his client as he had completed his life-term.
