Sindh Assembly members concern on corruption in SBCA

Karachi: While adopting unanimously a resolution demanding emergency exit gates in high-rise building, the members of Sindh assembly showed concern on corruption and mismanagement in Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and asked to ensure strict implementation of building safety rules in whole province of Sindh including its capital city, Karachi.

Private resolution 66, regarding emergency exit routes in high-rise buildings was tabled by Nusrat Sultana of PPPP and passed unanimously.

The mover said in many high-rise building safe emergency exit gates are there, jeopardizing precious lives. She asked the government to do the needful to save the lives of innocent people by providing emergency exit ways.

However, Mohammad Hussain of Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) said there is rampant corruption in the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA). He said in even inner lanes of Karachi where only one-plus one building is allowed four and five storied buildings are erected as the corrupt SBCA look the other way. He asked recently some marriage halls were razed in the city. He asked why these illegal marriage halls were allowed to be constructed and why the SBCA officials had not discharged their responsibilities to stop construction of these marriage halls.

Zubair Ahmed of MQM said in Hyderabad the situation is also worrisome as illegal constructions are at full swing. He asked the SBCA to take notice of blatant violation of building laws in Hyderabad.

Syed Khalid Ahmed, Moin Aamir Pirzada and Sumeta Afzal of MQM also supported the resolution.

Nusrat Beno Seher Abbasi of PML-F said the tragedy of Baldia Factory fire is a glaring example of failure of government and SBCA to implement the building safety laws. She asked to implement the laws to save precious lives.

Khuram Sher Zaman of PTI asked also to implement the law of public transport vehicles having emergency exit gates to save lives of passengers.

However, Sindh minister for local government Sharjeel Iman Memon accepted that there was corruption and mismanagement in related government departments. He said the rules cannot be violated unless the government officers are hands in glove with the violators. He said no one is authorize to use the amenity plots for commercial purpose. He said however, playground, parks and even green belts were used for the commercial purpose in Karachi. He said they have already razed about 50 illegal marriage halls in Karachi, but showing leniency no FIR was lodged against the illegal occupiers of these amenity plots.
