Karachi: The third edition of SAFF Women Football Championship, featuring all eight SAARC nations, will begin November 11 at Jinnah Sports Complex Football Stadium in Islamabad.
This will be the biggest football event for women in Pakistan in all eight SAARC region countries including Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Maldives, Sri Lanka and host Pakistan are participating. All the teams have confirmed their participation.
Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) General Secretary Ahmed Yar Khan Lodhi Saturday told media that Afghanistan women team has already arrived while teams of Bhutan, Sri Lanka and Nepal are expected to arrive Saturday night.
“And the rest will reach Pakistan by tomorrow (Sunday) hopefully,” Ahmed said.
“This event will not only benefit football but would also help other sports by paving the way for international action and would also portray a soft image of the country,” he added. “This event will also change the perception about Pakistan, which is considered to have big gender gap.”
He further said that Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada IPC Minister will inaugurate the event on November 11 at Jinnah Sports Complex. Shaikh Salman Bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa, President Asian Football Federation (AFF) will be the chief guest during the closing ceremony of the tournament, which will be held on November 20.
He added that fool proof security will be provided to all the teams during their stay till departure.
Meanwhile, Senator Rubina Irfan Chairperson Women Committee PFF said that Pakistan women team has many young players, and the whole team is highly motivated to perform well during the tournament and make the most of home advantage.
“Therefore we are expecting a very good performance from our team,” she added.
