Karachi: Tournament Director Col (Retd) Nadeem Ahmed Bhatti said that the inaugural Chief of the Army Staff Challenge Hockey Cup, which begins today (Thursday) at the Army Hockey Stadium in Rawalpindi, will be held annually.
Nadeem said it was the first time in the history of Pakistan hockey that a tournament has been named after COAS is being held.
“It will be regular feature of the annual calendar of the PHF (Pakistan Hockey Federation). We will make collective effort to make it a huge success,” he said.
He praised Army Sports Directorate for organizing this tournament in the city. “At a time when nobody is willing to take the ownership of the national game, Army stepped in to support hockey and the whole nation is thankful to them for organizing a national level tournament.”
He said the winner of the tournament will walk away with a prize of Rs. 100,000. While the runners up and third position holder will get Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 30,000 respectively.
Ten teams, divided into two groups, will participate in the tournament. Pool-A consists of PIA, Army (Senior), Punjab, PAF and Police while WAPDA, NBP, SSGC, Navy and Army (Junior) are placed in Pool-B.
