Sports: Softball: SFP to celebrate Softball Day in Pakistan: Saleem


Karachi: President Softball Federation of Pakistan (SFP) Mohammad Saleem Khan has said that SFP will be organizing several tournaments, camps and coaching courses will be organized to celebrate World Softball Day.

He said that 128 countries, where the game of softball has received immense popularity, will celebrate this day on June 13.

“We will organize several inter-school tournaments, summer camps and coaching courses in different cities of the country during this week to celebrate World Softball Day,” Salim said during the meeting of the organizing committee of South West Asia Women Softball Championship.

Pakistan is scheduled to host the event in Karachi from September 10-13. Teams from India, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq will be participating in the tournament.

Head coach Asif Azeem, who is also secretary of Sindh Softball Association (SSA), said that the federation is endeavoring to prepare a strong team for the inaugural South West Asia Women Softball Championship.

“We will organize a preparatory camp in August. We have already prepared a pool of top national players, which we identified during last month’s National Championship held in Rawalpindi,” Asif said.

He added that they were looking forward to prepare strong team for a forceful show in the team since it is the first time that Pakistan will be organizing such an event in which five countries will be participating.

He further said that Softball Confederation of Asia (SCA) President Dato Low Beng Choo will also come to Pakistan during the tournament.

“She has also assured us that SCA will also send qualified international coaches and umpires to Pakistan to conduct coaching and umpiring courses here,” he said.

Chief Selector Maroof-ul-Hasan said that organizing this tournament was a privilege for Pakistan and they will do their best to organize this tournament in a befitting manner.

“By organizing this event successfully, we will be able to portray a good image of Pakistan in the world, which will prove helpful in paving the way for more international events in the country,” he said.

Tournament Director Mohammad Zeeshan Merchant and Member Executive Committee Shujauddin were also present on the occasion.
